Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Fire Provided England's Ace Sets Aside His Ego at the Door.
One snub did the trick. Another and it might have appeared vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, who is much too clever not to realize that winning the World Cup will likely need contributions by Jude Bellingham, even if it is equally up to the player to fit into the tactical structures and player rankings essential with England now that he is back in the manager's welcoming fold.
Tuchel seeks Bellingham's edge, his intensity, but it is about channeling it constructively. Individual quality matters but the squad know from bitter experience that there is a price to pay when celebrity prevails. Still, a point has been made.
The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after his omission of the previous squad. He watched England qualify at the upcoming World Cup in his absence. He watched Morgan Rogers shine as a high-pressing No 10. He heard Tuchel discuss valuing the group’s energy and values. Naturally, he has responded in top form, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid versus Barcelona and the Italian side. Inclusion was a must; another omission would have made his squad place hanging by a thread.
The expectation is that Tuchel will have a midfielder concentrating on intimidating opponents instead of his own colleagues. Ultimately, in purely sporting terms, there is no advantage to picking a fight with a top talent in the world. The best outcome is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has shown him that playing for one's country is a valuable, precarious thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now provide cover for the youngster after demonstrating that he is unafraid to make big calls.
“There is no problem with him, and no concern with the character,” the German said. “Bellingham possesses the edge. It takes that kind of fire to succeed at the top that he reached. Everyone must support him and build a setting where he can use that intensity in matches and in pursuit of success we are building as a team.”
Bellingham dominated most of the attention at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming dead-rubber qualifiers versus Serbia and the other. Who else? Well, how about Phil Foden? Here is another prodigious No 10 in need of love and guidance. Foden has not played for England since March and has found it hard to hit the heights this year but the boss was impressed by the player after his display in Manchester City’s win versus the German side recently.
The issue, however, is how to use the multiple playmakers at England’s disposal. Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be a good argument to pick another youngster once he overcomes a ongoing injury. Would taking five No 10s to the tournament be excessive? The previous manager failed to discover the correct balance at Euro 2024. He made concessions by forcing both stars into the starting lineup, restricting the captain's style as a result.
It is hard to see Tuchel doing similar if it harms the attacking balance. There is room for a single playmaker, with speedy wingers on the flanks. Clarity helps. He is in as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first time, is a central midfielder and the returning Adam Wharton will compete with another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no position on the wing for the City star, who must play central. Tuchel prefers him close to Kane. “It does not make sense to tell Foden: ‘You are needed in the team but no spot exists on your best position, could you fill in at left wing? Can you play other flank?’” he said. “Phil will play in the advanced midfield role, through the center. I've long had this idea about him for a long time. In my view it suits him best.”
Tuchel agreed there are occasions when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “One senses almost like, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And a player like him who has obvious passion to play football, then obviously an issue exists, whether it's his role, the setup, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is additionally so used to playing for his club in a particular setup, to have a clear task. I think he benefits a lot from clarity. What is my position? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? When should I to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defensive duties?”
The manager talked about one star making runs for easy finishes and Foden scoring strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a longlist of many candidates. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and the midfielder have dropped out. A new face is recognized for his excellent performances for City at left-back. Intrigue is high.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no direct replacement for the captain in this squad. Interestingly, Tuchel hinted at deploying the playmaker as a false 9 versus Serbia or the other. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives should Kane be absent. With qualification secured, this is a moment for a little experimentation.
Meanwhile, it is also a chance to develop Kane’s relationship with his teammate going. It's surprising that one must look back to Bellingham assisting the captain to score in an international match versus Scotland in September 2023 to find the one and only time in many appearances for the national team when the pair linked up for a score. Tuchel will know that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other a single time during the team's ties with Denmark and another at the Euros. The connection is lacking.
“This is where at some point it becomes the duty of the players,” he stated. He is not afraid to speak frankly. Remains a sense of the player being on trial. He cannot even be assured to start against the upcoming opponents. Tuchel wants Bellingham committed but he will be observing him closely. Set aside self-importance outside. It will make a powerful squad into an superior one.
