The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and championed its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about observing this endearing family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing cynical streak. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
