Radioactive Seafood Crisis: The Nation Confronts Contamination in Key Industrial Zone
A significant industrial zone located in the suburbs of the capital is addressing radioactive pollution after an official team detected traces of the dangerous isotope Caesium-137 at twenty-two manufacturing plants within the area, that encompasses businesses that export chilled marine products.
Urgent Response and Goods Recall
The finding has triggered emergency cleanup efforts and the relocation of local residents, coming after a similar pollution alert in the US that was traced back to the Jakarta facilities.
An important multinational store chain is among the companies that have withdrawn items from its stores after the discovery.
Probe and Discovery of Contamination
The country's authorities launched an inquiry after the US Food and Drug Administration detected Caesium-137, a nuclear substance, in a shipment of frozen coated shrimp exported by a local company.
The FDA issued an advisory advising suppliers and retailers to discard the product and avoid selling it, even though the detected level was far below the authority's action threshold. They noted that the quantity of Caesium-137 they had detected would not present an immediate hazard to consumers.
The FDA explained: “The primary impact on health of concern following extended, repeated low dose contact (for example through eating of contaminated food or liquid over time) is an increased risk of cancer, resulting from damage to DNA within living cells.”
Extensive Contamination and Health Checks
Radiation tests revealed at least twenty-two plants in the industrial area were contaminated. The official team did not identify the twenty-one other production sites, but said they would promptly receive decontamination processes carried out by the country's nuclear authority.
A senior official stated that residents living in highly polluted zones would be relocated until the location was cleaned, emphasizing that the safety of the residents was the “main concern”.
Health officials also performed examinations on nearby workers and residents living close to the manufacturing estate, identifying 9 people who tested positive for exposure to Caesium-137. These individuals were sent to a hospital before being allowed to return home.
Decontamination and Isolation Measures
The contaminated sites will immediately receive cleanup procedures by Indonesia's nuclear agency. Authorities have also selected the site of a recycled metal factory as an isolation facility for contaminated goods.
Indonesia, which operates no nuclear power plants or weapons programme, suspects that Caesium-137 may have come into the country from overseas.
Source of Contamination and Trade Limits
A taskforce spokesperson informed the media that recycled metal shipments were the probable source of contamination and announced the government would immediately enforce restrictions on scrap metal arrivals. He said that vehicles were also being inspected for potential contamination as they moved through the area.
About Caesium-137 and Public Concerns
Caesium-137 is a dangerous radioactive element that typically enters the ecosystem as a consequence of nuclear experiments or accidents, such as the Fukushima disaster or Chornobyl. Small amounts are present in soil, products and air.
The amount found in the frozen shrimp was far lower than FDA action levels, but the agency stated long-term exposure to even small amounts of caesium was linked to an elevated risk of the disease.
Recall Details
The recalled shrimp was sold at major retail outlets across at least a dozen US states, such as Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
