Player Ratings: The Three Lions Secure a Spot for the Next World Cup
Gareth Southgate's side earned their spot at the next World Cup with a decisive triumph over Latvia on the midweek fixture.
The Starting Lineup
- The goalkeeper – Made a few of good saves in the latter period to extend his impressive clean sheet record. That's nine straight in a row. 6.5
- The full-back – Has taken to international football with ease. Sterner tests await, of course, but a good start to his England career. 7
- The defender – Two games in five days will do the City defender a lot of good. Still one of the first names on the starting lineup, fitness permitting. 7
- Aston Villa's defender – Picked ahead of his competitor and didn't put a foot wrong. Made an excellent last-ditch recovery tackle in the closing period to boot. 7
- Arsenal's talent – Looked a little ring rusty at times, expected given his scarce minutes at his club. An interesting few months ahead. 6
- The midfielder – Looks undroppable in this England team at the moment. Looks suited to this level and has developed an excellent partnership with Rice. 7
- Declan Rice – Excelling in his attacking role. The backbone of England's midfield is displaying his attacking abilities now. Becoming a true all-round midfielder. 7
- Morgan Rogers – Not as impactful as he has been in England's wins over previous opponents. We should find out next month who is the true owner of the number 10 shirt. 6
- Arsenal's star – Provided an assist to his excellent goal against Wales last Thursday. Will be vital to England's prospects next summer. 7.5
- The striker – Playing brilliantly. Boosted his tally for the season to 20 strikes. Has found the net 76 times for his country. Is 100 possible 100? 8
- Anthony Gordon – Clinical finish to get the ball rolling for England here in the Latvian capital. Has done a good job during this fixture period. 7.5
The Bench Players
- Jordan Henderson (for Rice 60) – Kept things moving in midfield. 6
- Crystal Palace's star (for Rogers 60) – Excellently taken goal and a menace. 7
- West Ham's attacker (for Saka 60) – Faces competition on his hands to make the squad when the squad is full. 6
- The defender (for Stones 71) – As you'd expect, dealt with everything aerially. 6
- Marcus Rashford (for Gordon 71) – A quick burst down the left caught the eye. 6
With a World Cup spot secured, the team can now prepare for next summer with high hopes.
