Milei Statuette, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Sell International Gifts for Charity

Getting rid of unwanted presents could be viewed as slightly impolite – unless it's done in the proper manner.

A Charitable Sale

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell an estimated 270 presents received by her by world leaders on official trips. The diverse haul is said to contain items such as a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

The collection, combined, are worth an estimated €800,000. The plan is to auctioned off in a public auction by a Rome-based art dealer. An exact timeline has not been finalized, but the goal is to hold the auction by year's end, with all funds raised benefiting non-profit organizations.

Storage Room Holdings

The items reportedly stored in a repository on the upper level of the government headquarters. Sources state that Meloni additionally planning to auction off gifts received by her political forerunners that have been stored away indefinitely.

The detailed catalog is yet to be made public, but a glimpse emerged earlier this year when a detailed register of items received was presented in parliament. The query raised if a legal value limit was being followed. According to regulation, a prime minister cannot take home presents worth more than €300.

A Global Assortment of Gifts

Notable gifts feature:

  • A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from India's prime minister.
  • A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
  • A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the former US president.
  • A tablet from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Artworks from the Moldovan government.
  • Various other items including makeup, a board, and numerous carpets from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the most unusual gifts included the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," one might note.

Political Backdrop

Meloni has been credited, particularly from her own political sphere, with garnering support from global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a significant player on the global scene once again.

This charitable initiative highlights a novel approach to manage the protocol gifts that build up during a leader's tenure.
