Long-Forgotten Johann Sebastian Bach Pieces Presented for First Time in 320 Years

Historical organ composition
Bach is thought to have created the two compositions at the start of his musical journey

Recently identified organ works by the renowned composer Bach have been revealed and played in the European nation for the premiere performance in 320 years.

The nation's Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer labeled the finding of the two compositions a "important event for the global music scene".

They first caught the attention of a musical scholar in 1992 when he was documenting Bach manuscripts at the Royal Library of Belgium.

The musical compositions - the Chaconne in D minor and G minor Chaconne - were undated and unsigned. The scholar spent the subsequent thirty years working to authenticate the identity of the pieces.

Memorable Concert

They were presented at the historic Leipzig church in the eastern German municipality, where Bach is interred and where he worked as a music director for over two decades.

The two pieces were executed by organist from the Netherlands Ton Koopman, who said he was honored to be able to present them for the first time in over three centuries.

He said the compositions were "remarkably sophisticated" and would be "a great asset for modern musicians, as they are also appropriate for reduced-scale organs".

Cultural Relevance

They are thought to have been composed early in Bach's career, when he was employed as an organ teacher in the town of the Thuringian town in the German region.

The scholar, who is now the head of the musical archive in the city, said they exhibited several features particular to the composer.

"In terms of style, the works also include aspects that can be observed in Bach's works from that era, but not in those of different artists," he said.

They are believed to have been written down in the early eighteenth century by Bach's apprentice, the musical student.

At a revealing of the pieces, the researcher said he was "almost completely confident that Bach had created the pair of works" and they have now been included into the official catalogue of his compositions.
