Line of Duty Announced for 7th Season on the British Broadcaster
The beloved crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.
A brand new six-part season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the production team.
Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."
The last season wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived this week.
New Challenges for The Team
Series seven will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.
Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to tackle misconduct within the police force.
Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case to date."
Fresh Face and Complex Case
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.
Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, the teaser hinted.
In a statement, the creator commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had countless fans track the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh installment."
He added: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."
Actor Responses
Martin Compston described being part of the series as "the role of a career".
"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.
Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"
The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."
"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."
Show History
The drama launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.
The BBC has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will premiere.
The conclusion of series six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the time there were no plans for further series.
Nevertheless, the corporation announced on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
